This series is designed primarily for teachers, principals and administrators who are looking to enhance their credit recovery programs. We will focus on developing sustainable programs that build on existing programs and technology, while preparing students for college and career.

Participants will leave the webinar having identified short-term steps they can take immediately, next week, and next month. The Best of Both Worlds: A Blended Approach to Credit Recovery

While off-the-shelf credit recovery programs can make individualized, competency-based learning a reality, technology alone cannot adequately prepare off-track youth for graduation and post-secondary success. In this webinar, we will examine how to enhance technology-based courseware programs with face-to-face learning and support options that motivate and engage students, while preparing them for careers and college. Specific strategies will include intake and orientation programs, enhanced curriculum and teacher-directed activities, and face-to-face support through learning coaches, structured labs and communication with classroom teachers. After hearing from successful programs that effectively leverage these blended strategies, participants will have an opportunity to share their challenges in designing, operating, and sustaining credit recovery programs and to begin identifying short- and long-term steps to increase student achievement with graduation and post-secondary success goals in mind. Schools featured include Hartford Public High School.

Clare Bertrand, Senior Manager, JFF
Clare Bertrand is a senior manager at JFF working with the Back on Track Through College team, designing and managing web-based projects geared toward helping struggling and off-track youth re-engage and succeed throughout their high school and postsecondary programs. In addition, she works as a trainer and developer for Counseling to Careers. Before working on the Back on Track team, she worked on the Time to Completion Project, as part of the College Productivity Initiative, funded by Lumina Foundation for Education.

Previously, Ms. Bertrand was a project coordinator at Teachers21, a nonprofit organization focused on reshaping the profession of teaching through professional development, district reform efforts, and policy and advocacy work. Her responsibilities included co-directing a national conference on teacher retention. She has also worked as a youth program coordinator at the Mattapan Family Service Center. Ms. Bertrand has a M.Phil in gender studies from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, and a B.A. from James Madison University.

 

Lili Allen, Program Director, Jobs for the Future
Lili is a program director on JFF's Back on Track team, where she helps build quality pathways to college-ready graduation for struggling students and out-of-school youth. She convenes a leadership network of communities (Boston, Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia, and Portland, Oregon) that are national frontrunners in scaling up options for youth who have fallen off track to graduation, helping them to build new schools for this population, and improve existing ones.

Prior to JFF, Ms. Allen spent 15 years building collaborative programs between schools and community partners on behalf of urban youth. She holds a Master's in Education from Harvard University.
