Panelists Chris Eckrich, Mike Fassler, Deb Houden, and Steve McClure will explore case studies and best practices in family governance, and how successful families create cultures that support continuity for generations to come.

Christopher Eckrich

A Principal Consultant of the Family Business Consulting Group, Inc.®, Christopher Eckrich specializes in building leadership excellence and maintaining family unity in family owned businesses. He assists family owned firms in establishing orderly succession plans that maximize effective leadership transition and prevent conflict during the transition. He also provides family business members with skills and strategies to successfully manage working relationships and reduce the inherent conflict that is present when family members work together.

Chris's family history of entrepreneurship in meat processing and other industries provided the impetus for his commitment to the family business field. His clients include family businesses and other closely held firms from a wide variety of business sectors. He has presented at national conferences and regularly gives seminars and workshops on succession planning, leadership building, managing relationships, and preventing conflict in family owned firms. Chris was awarded the Family Firm Institute's 1994 Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award for his research on family business dynamics, and now serves on several review committees for the Family Firm Institute. He is published in the Family Business Review, Nation's Business, and often writes for newspapers and business publications to assist those who work together with families..

Mike Fassler

Mike Fassler has been serving family businesses since 1984. Mike provides family business planning services with a focus on helping his clients grow their capabilities and their businesses.

Mike helps families develop and implement plans to transfer leadership, management, and ownership of their businesses to both family and non-family successors. Most of Mike’s work is focused on family businesses owned and managed by sibling teams and cousin teams. A significant component of Mike’s work with clients includes strategic planning with an emphasis on helping clients reconcile the competing demands of the family and the business as the family and the business grows.

Mike understands how to teach and motivate family business leaders to develop and use decision making, communication, and reward structures that help their family businesses become more effective in achieving personal, family, and business goals.

Prior to joining the Family Business Consulting Group, Inc. Mike served as Vice President & Managing Director for Lookout Ridge Consulting, a division of AgStar Financial Services. AgStar is a $6+ billion total asset financial services company. In addition to leading the consulting business unit, Mike also served on AgStar’s Senior Leadership Team. Prior to joining Lookout Ridge Consulting, Mike served as President of and was a principal of Salisbury Management Services which was acquired by AgStar Financial Services.

Deb Houden

A consultant with the Family Business Consulting Group, Inc., Deb Houden specializes in helping family-owned businesses with family communication, transition, and next generation development by providing resources, tools, and knowledge that are needed to navigate their specific issues.

Deb has worked with numerous families on developing effective communication and conflict resolution skills, developing family meetings, beginning stages of board development, and working with next generational members of family firms (including adolescents). She is adept at developing processes that help families go through changes within the business and family systems.

Dr. Houden is a regular presenter to industry groups, family business centers, and individual company retreats on topics including the next generation and succession, communication and conflict resolution, and perceptions of fairness.

Stephen McClure

Steve is a principal of The Family Business Consulting Group. He specializes in making family owned a competitive advantage. In doing so, he assists with family communications and decision making, succession planning and implementation, and governance & management in family firms. His work often involves family and non-family employee teamwork, implementing advisory boards or boards of directors, family councils, successor development and management practices, such as compensation and strategic planning, tailored to family firms. His clients are primarily in North America and include financial services, manufacturing, philanthropic, distribution, construction, retail, agricultural, textile services and professional services (i.e., family offices and trust companies); all operated or owned by families.

Mr. McClure earned a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Purdue University. He has taught business continuity planning and family business management and governance to retail networks of international manufacturers, clients of law practices, international trade groups, business advisors, and to the members and owners of family businesses, both domestically and internationally. He is an innovator in providing unique services to private businesses and his articles on consulting methods appear in three volumes of collected works. He is co-author of books on family business succession, family councils, compensation and working in a family business.
