In 2012, members of a surgical safety consortium, facilitated by their professional liability insurer, prioritized developing a specialized pathway that promotes the safe care of obese patients throughout their perioperative experience. This obesity pathway ensures that these patients are medically optimized for their procedures, proper equipment is available and policies and procedures are in place to appropriately monitor patients who are at risk for complications from surgery and anesthesia. This webinar will describe the process for creating the program, how it was implemented and program results using survey data, process measures and clinical outcomes.
1) Describe the increased risk that morbidly obese patients face when having surgery.
2) Demonstrate how a multihospital collaborative can develop and implement a care map to address the surgical risks of obese patients.
3) Identify tools that can be used over time to measure the impact of an obesity care map for surgical patients.
