Treating patients with chronic pain is complex and frustrations are high among both providers and patients. According to the CDC, our nation is in the midst of an unprecedented prescription opioid epidemic. Federal and state agencies, along with specialty societies, are releasing guidelines for provider prescribing practices. These guidelines are aimed at reducing both the supply of and demand for narcotic medications. This presentation will discuss the scope of the chronic pain and opioid crisis, identify the risks involved in treating chronic pain patients and provide solutions to enhance patient safety and reduce the risks.

This session will provide you with the knowledge to:

1. Understand the scope of the chronic pain and prescription pain medication problem in the U.S.
2. Identify risks involved in treating chronic pain patients and prescribing pain medication.
3. List solutions to enhance patient safety and reduce liability risks.
